TORRANCE, Calif., Apr. 11 -- Scion announced manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) today for the 2009 model year xB urban utility vehicle and tC sports coupe. The xB will arrive at dealerships later this month while the tC will arrive in May.
After a major model change in 2008, the xB carries over with only a change in exterior color. Stingray Metallic replaces Nautical Blue Metallic. The base MSRP for the iconic xB is $15,750 when equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and $16,700 for the four-speed automatic with sequential shifting. Prices for both configurations represent an increase of $100 or 0.6 percent.
The sporty 2009 tC also carries over with one change, updated seat fabric. Prices for both the automatic and manual transmission remain the same as the 2008 models. The tC equipped with a five-speed manual transmission has a base MSRP of $17,000, while the four-speed automatic transmission model carries an MSRP of $17,800.
All Scions come mono-spec with a generous list of standard features including a 160-watt maximum output Pioneer audio system with iPod connectivity and auxiliary port; power steering, windows, door locks and mirrors; cruise control; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake assist; driver and front passenger airbags; front seat-mounted side airbags; front and rear side curtain airbags; and tilt steering wheel with audio controls.
The delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee for all Scion models is $620 and is not included in the MSRP. DPH fees for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.
Test Drive: Bigger xB means there's more to love
Toyota has overhauled its Scion xB squarish sedan, leaving little but the name intact.
The 2008 xB is a foot longer, 3 inches wider, 600-plus pounds heavier, 14% thirstier and some two grand more expensive than the original xB. It also has 12% more passenger space, 53% more horsepower and 60% more torque.

My, how you’ve grown! Creeping big-ism by Marty Padgett
When Toyota's Scion dropped its mini-bomb on this year's Chicago auto show in the form of the '08 xB wagonlet, you could hear the crests fall around Detroit, particularly in the Auburn Hills and downtown Detroit corridors of GM and Chrysler.
What used to be a teensy, cutesy JDM (Japanese domestic market) take on the station wagon had grown up, grown out, and had become more "sinister," in the words of hip 'n groovy Scion execs who, ironically, have risen to their current levels of employment by thinking out of the box.
TOYOTA likes to think of its quirky, boxy Scion as a 21st-century chariot of the soul — not just an affordable car, but also a unique expression of the young, hip person who Toyota hopes is driving it.
Now Toyota’s Scion enthusiasts will have even more “me time”: a marketing campaign with an underground vibe that is intended to show just how much their chosen transportation reflects their personality.
With an eye to the social networking ethos that has made Facebook and MySpace wildly popular, Toyota will let Scion owners design their own personal “coat of arms” online, a piece of owner-generated art that is meant to reflect their job, hobbies and — um, O.K. — karma.
In making their personalized crests, Scion owners can choose from among hundreds of symbols, all designed by a professional graffiti artist. The symbols range from an eagle, a jester, a king’s crown and a worker’s fist to Japanese anime-style flowers, a three-person family and a yin-yang circle. Customers can download their designs and have them made into window decals or take them to an auto airbrushing shop to have them professionally painted onto their cars.
The Scion is an economy car aimed at younger, stylish drivers, and the design Web site, scionspeak.com, is free. But Scion enthusiasts must pay for the auto shop renderings of their design, an indulgence that can cost thousands of dollars.
'Assy' offers Scion key marketing venue
Toyota Motor Sales' Scion division will reach the coveted young male demographic by sponsoring the new U.S. TV series "Assy McGee," a sales official said.
John O'Hara, general sales manager for ad sales and marketing for the Adult Swim network, said "Assy" will allow the Toyota youth brand a chance to speak directly to young men through a media they enjoy, TVWeek.com reported Saturday. ... MORE Get Your Scion an Agent. It Might Be Famous.
